USF Criminal Justice Professor Tony Ribera Weighs in on Oakland Mayor Hiring New Chief of Police | USF in the News |

"OAKLAND — After months of gathering input from the community, Mayor Libby Schaaf is poised to make what is perhaps her most important hire yet: the next Oakland chief of police."

"And the next chief must keep the peace among a variety of groups — including the powerful police officers union — that demand a say in how the department should operate.

“The police chief can make or break a mayor,” said Anthony Ribera, a retired San Francisco police chief.

That’s especially so in Oakland, where police chief turnover is high and federal monitors, the mayor and a new police commission all wield power and influence over the top cop."
